What is SLIA?
The Science and Literacy Inquiry Academy is a San José State University MA
degree program for K-8 teachers. SLIA is centered around meeting the needs
of diverse learners by focusing
on inquiry-based science
instruction,
literacy issues in science instruction (language development), and
the integration of technology into science instruction.
What are SLIA’s
Goals?
The primary focus of the SLIA Academy is to enhance teacher leadership
in a variety of ways, the emphasis options are:

Science, Language & Culture
SLIA Requirement (30 units)
SLIA MA CORE (15-18
units)
EDTE 214 Lrning Hi-Tech Evrnmnt (3 units)
EDTE 215 Constructivism (3 units)
EDTE 244 Seminar in Curriculum (3 units)
EDTE 250 or EDTE 221 Rsrch In Education (3 units)
EDTE 298 or EDTE 299 MA
Project/Thesis (3-6 units) SLIA MA Focus/Electives (9-12 units)
Choose from one of the program areas:
Science (Upper Division Science)
Technology (IT 200 level classes)
Language Development and/or Social/Cultural (200
level classes)
What are the MA admission requirements?
Preliminary Credential
Minimum of 3.0 GPA
3 Letters of Recommendation
2-page essay

- Apply to SJSU Graduate Program by completing the graduate
application form.
- Apply to the MA degree program by completing the
MA application form.
