Spring 2007
The PS3 Summer
Institute Instructional Teams gathered for the kick off beginning their
long hours of preparation for the June summer institute. Each grade level
team is designing a session that will align with California Science Standards
so that teachers deepen their understanding of the content behind their
units. It will be adult learning in the context of a variety of good teaching
strategies. Sessions include exciting field trips to expand teachers’ horizons.
Each instructional team is staffed by a content expert and a classroom teacher
so that the expertise of both can be shared. In addition, most sessions
are working with a volunteer scientist in the field who may assist with
the field trip, provide resources or become a guest speaker. We look forward
to a most engaging week of great learning with 300 teachers. Many sessions
are filled but there is still space left at the 7th and 8th grades. Join
us if you are available June 25-29, 2007!
Introducing some members of our Instructional Teams…
Summer 2006
Featuring Writing in the Service of Science, PS3 middle
school science teachers gathered to engage in science labs and activities
that lend themselves to writing. Teachers met by grade level to experience
strategies that encourage students to get their ideas flowing, use writing
to enhance their conceptual understanding and, finally, publish their thinking
for an audience. Taking these ideas back to the classroom, teachers are
now meeting in local study groups to discuss implementation and examine
student work. Together the study group members determine what next steps
they might use to move their students to the next level.
