PS3
Summer Science Institute
Partnership for Student Success in Science presents summer
science institutes for elementary teachers…
- Explore the FOSS kits listed below.
- Deepen your science background by learning from experts in the field.
- Experience models of good teaching with hands-on investigations and
understand the over-arching principles behind your science curriculum.
- All sessions are based on the California Science Standards.
- For attending the entire program, teachers receive one or more of the
following, based on district guidelines:
- 30 hours of district professional development credit
- PS3 $750
stipend for attending 5–day program
- University academic professional development credit (available for
a fee)
- (Some districts allow combinations of these. Please
check with your science resource teacher for your district’s
compensation.)
Newark and San Mateo–Foster City teachers have priority registration from February 25th–March 21st. BASEE teachers may register beginning March 21st. Student teachers and those outside
of PS3 and
BASEE II districts may register after May 1st on a space available
basis.

Animals Two by Two
Course Syllabus
Full: Wait List Open |
This course will explore the fundamental biology principles that underpin the kindergarten state science standards. The course will guide teachers through the state adopted FOSS curriculum module, Animals Two by Two, where they will engage in the hands-on investigations that explore four common land and water animals. Participants will learn the adult-level science content associated with the structures, behaviors, environmental conditions, basic needs, and diversity of the vertebrates and invertebrates they will be using with their students. |

This course will explore the fundamental physical science principles that underpin the first grade state science standards. The course will guide teachers through the state adopted FOSS curriculum module, Solids and Liquids, where they will engage in the hands-on investigations that explore the states of matter – solids, liquids, and gases. Participants will learn the adult-level science content associated with the properties of solids and liquids including: why substances can change state when mixed, heated or cooled: the physical change associated with dissolving and evaporation: and density as a characteristic property of substances. |

Solid Earth
Course
Syllabus
Full: Wait List Open |
This course will explore the fundamental earth science principles that underpin the fourth grade state science standards. The course will guide teachers through the state adopted FOSS curriculum module, Solid Earth, where they will engage in the hands-on investigations that explore the basic principles of physical geology. Participants will learn the adult-level science content associated with minerals, rocks and rock formation, and landforms. |

Water Planet
Course
Syllabus
Full: Wait List Open |
This course will explore the fundamental earth science principles that underpin the fifth grade state science standards. The course will guide teachers through the state adopted FOSS curriculum module, Water Planet, where they will engage in the hands-on investigations that explore the basic principles of astronomy, the water cycle, and how the ocean influences weather patterns. Participants will learn the adult-level science content associated with the solar system and earth systems, particularly atmospheric science. They will leave this session with an understanding of the activities and classroom management techniques required to teach this module. |
